AdilanClub: Man makes giant robot controlled by iPhone

AdilanClub:Breaking news, is the best for news

Like many Japanese, Kogoro Kurata grew up watching futuristic robots in movies and animation, wishing that he could bring them to life and pilot one himself. Unlike most other Japanese, he has actually done it.

His 4-tonne, 4-meter (13 feet) tall Kuratas robot is a grey behemoth with a built-in pilot's seat and hand-held controller that allows an operator to flex its massive arms, move it up and down and drive it at a speed of up to 10 kph (6 mph).

"The robots we saw in our generation were always big and always had people riding them, and I don't think they have much meaning in the real world," said Kurata, a 39-year-old artist.

AdilanClub: From maid-abuse monster to mentor

Top, from left, Miss Sarah Schmitzkova (formerly Muhammad Iz'aan Mohd Sazali), his mother Maselly Abdul Aziz and and sister Ms Nur Rizan Mohd Sazali in a photo taken last year. The three had caused extensive injuries to their maid, so much so that she jumped out of their third-storey flat to seek help.

SINGAPORE - The startling details of mother and daughter Maimunah Ahmad and Daliana Abdullah abusing their Indonesian maid, Ms Puteri Andanari, 26, made headlines last week.

Ms Puteri was slapped multiple times, had her hair pulled and her head slammed against the wall. These acts of abuse allegedly happened within a few months of her arriving in Singapore to work as a maid for Daliana, 40, and her mother Maimunah, 80.

What drives such employers to sadistic acts of violence against their helpers? And can they ever live down the shame?

One former horrific maid abuser, Miss Sarah Schmitzkova, regrets what she did and is trying to make up for her crime.

AdilanClub: Gorier images to deter new smokers

AdilanClub:Breaking news, is the best for news

A diseased eye, kept open by a pair of callipers, peering from a pack of cigarettes.

A grey-skinned patient, intubated to help him breathe, makes it to the back of a metal cigarillo box.

These are but two of a set of six new and more gruesome pictures intended to scare new and younger smokers to stop lighting up.

These and four others - a miscarried foetus, a crying baby with a hook through his earlobe, open heart surgery and a cancerous lesion on the neck - will appear on cigarette packs in March next year.

AdilanClub: Ice, Ice Lady sentenced

AdilanClub:Breaking news, is the best for news

An ice-cream parlour owner dubbed the "ice lady" for the calculated way in which she killed her ex-husband and lover was sentenced to life in a secure mental institution.

Estibaliz Carranza, 34, had confessed to shooting the two men at close range in the back of the head, cutting up their bodies with a chainsaw, freezing them in a deep freeze and later interring them in concrete under the cellar of her store.

Judge Susanne Lehr told a Vienna court her confession and her state of "considerable psychological damage" were mitigating factors, but her careful planning and her behaviour after the murders counted against her.

AdilanClub: 'How I became a sexually harassed uncle'

AdilanClub:Breaking news, is the best for news

He must be Singapore's hottest uncle.

The Hokkien-speaking dude gave up what most men would consider a dream job - massaging models - to take up an office job, only to find that he can't shake his past.

Realising who he is, the hot, young women in his office sexually harass him in blatant attempts to get him to massage them.

While the uncle is irritated by the women's attention, people can't seem to get enough of him.

In just a week, a YouTube video of him being "sexually harassed" has gone viral, receiving more than 1.8 million hits and being shared over 1,000 times on Facebook.

Mr Toh Kia Hing, 53, who plays the uncle in the video, tells The New Paper on Sunday that he is nothing like his onscreen persona.

AdilanClub: How bosses pick the employees they promote

AdilanClub:Breaking news, is the best for news

LEADERS of tomorrow could be buried in companies who don't have the management skills to unearth hidden gems and recognise rising stars.

While most businesses talk about employee engagement and development, many don't have a strategy to identify their best employees, often investing in office self-promoters and corporate psychopaths.

"The wrong people do sometimes get to the top of organisations – and more frequently than we feel comfortable about," Professor David Clutterbuck, a world expert on leadership and management, recently told the HRIZON human resources conference in Melbourne in September.
