SINGAPORE - Mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter Shahril Salim turned 22 on Tuesday.

To celebrate, his family and friends bought not one, but two chocolate cakes.

But instead of blowing out the candles at a boisterous party, he lay unconscious on a hospital bed at Singapore General Hospital.

Although his eyes open and his fingers curl into tight fists intermittently, Mr Shahril is still in a coma, explains his 29-year-old brother Jufri Salim.

"He may look like he's awake, but he doesn't respond clearly when you speak to him or ask him questions. Doctors are not sure about whether or not the movements are his way of expressing himself or due to involuntary reflexes.

"We didn't sing the birthday song because we weren't sure about how he would feel about us celebrating while he's in this state," Mr Jufri says quietly.

One cake was for the doctors and nurses who have been caring for him the past month. The other, which carried a photo of him in training gear, was for his family and friends, who celebrated in a solemn mood.

WASHINGTON- US police have foiled a plot to kill teen pop idol Justin Bieber and possibly castrate him with pruning shears, with the alleged killer promised $2,500 per testicle, legal documents revealed Thursday.

Mark Staake, 41, and his nephew, Tanner Ruane, were arrested in Vermont and New York last month and face charges in New Mexico of conspiracy to commit murder and conspiracy to commit aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

The pair were allegedly plotting to strangle two victims and castrate them with pruning shears, but a convicted killer who is serving life in prison told police that the "ultimate" target was Bieber, who was performing in New York.

A village council in the eastern Indian state of Bihar has banned the use of mobile phones by women, saying the phones were "debasing the social atmosphere" by leading to elopements—a move that set off outraged protests from activists.

In addition to the ban, the Sunderbari village council in a Muslim-dominated area some 385km east of Patna, the capital of Bihar, has also imposed a fine of 10,000 rupees (RM560) if a girl is caught using a mobile phone on the streets. Married women would have to pay 2,000 rupees (RM112).

An Indonesian politician dumped his teenage wife, just four days after they were married, because "she didn't bleed" when they had sex on the first night.

"I felt that she was not a virgin because no blood came out," Aceng Fikri, the Garut District Chief in West Java province, told reporters, adding that he wanted to marry a woman who's "beautiful on the outside and on the inside".

The 40-year-old politician lamented that he slept with Fani Oktora, whom he took as his second wife, only once after spending Rp250 million (RM80 million) on their wedding ceremony on 14th July this year.
