KANGAR - All she wanted to do was offer support to her 37-year-old husband, who was to be sentenced for a drug-related offence.

However, Shahidawati Shabudin, 37, ended up going into labour and delivered a baby boy with the help of a cleaner, court employees, policewomen and members of the public.


The heart-wrenching scene happened at the open space of the court complex here at 10am.

JAKARTA - Floods in Indonesia's capital Jakarta have left at least 11 people dead, authorities said Friday as murky brown waters submerged parts of the city's business district, causing chaos for a second day.

The capital's worst floods in five years have also forced 18,000 people from their homes, the nation's disaster agency said, with many ferried to temporary shelters on rafts.


"Floods are occurring still and since January 15, 11 people have died, five of which from electrocution," said National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho.

AdilanClub: 2 Malaysians taken hostage in Algeria

KUALA LUMPUR - Two Malaysians have been confirmed to be among 41 workers held hostage at the Ain Amenas gas field in the eastern central region of Algeria since Wenesday.

Wisma Putra has confirmed that the hostages' families and their branch office company in Singapore have been notified of the situation.


Foreign Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman has also contacted his counterpart in Algeria, Mourad Medelci, to seek the Algerian government's assistance in ensuring the hostages safety and release.


"We are deeply concerned with the hostage-taking incident involving Malaysians and will do our utmost in efforts to secure their release," he said in a statement issued yesterday.

ALGIERS - Many people were killed when Algerian forces opened fire on a vehicle at a remote gas plant where gunmen were holding dozens of Western hostages, a resident of the locality and Arab news reports said on Thursday.

The resident, who asked not to be identified, said there were many bodies at the scene. He did not give firm numbers of the dead or say whether they were kidnappers, hostages or both.
