Speed limit for federal, state roads reduced

KUALA LUMPUR : The speed limit for federal and state roads throughout the country has been reduced by 10km per hour (kmph) in a bid to ensure the safety of road users during the "balik kampung" exodus for Aidilfitri.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha said the speed limit for federal roads was now 80kmph from 90kmph, and that of state roads 70kmph from 80kmph.

Three arrested over murder of Japanese trader

KUALA LUMPUR: Three foreigners have been picked up by the police in connection with the murder of a Japanese businessman in a hotel room in Jalan Selaman near here.

They were detained at a house in Taman Kosas here early yesterday morning.

According to sources, the suspects were arrested following a tip-off.

Police were investigating whether the suspects had valid travel documents. Ampang OCPD Asst Comm Amiruddin confirmed the arrests and said all three were remanded for seven days.

The hotel's housekeeping staff made the shocking discovery on Monday afternoon when they found the victim tied to a friend, a tourist, who had minor injuries.

The tourist was sent to Hospital Kuala Lumpur for a check-up.

It is believed that both the tourists were beaten before being robbed in the hotel room.

Police have recorded the statement of the victim's friend.

It was learnt that both men were jewellers who had come to the country on a business trip on Aug 20.

Doctor beheaded by his Bangladeshi gardener

BENTONG: A doctor who worked at the Bentong Prison was brutally murdered and his head severed by his gardener, a Bangladeshi, last night.

Pahang CID Chief SAC T. Narenasegaran said from initial investigations police believe the victim, Dr Harjit Singh, 61, was killed at about 8pm last night.

Narenasegaran said the suspect had surrendered himself to the police at 11.40pm last night.

Police believe the victim was resting on an easy chair in the porch of his house near the garden, situated about 50m from the main road in Kampung Sertik near here, when he was attacked from behind.

"We found a parang in the area, believed to be the weapon used by the suspect to sever the victim's head," he told reporters here today, adding that the case was being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code.

The victim who has been working on a contract at the Bentong Prison for the past three years was the brother-in-law of Kuala Lumpur deputy police chief Datuk Amar Singh Ishar Singh.

The suspect who has been working with the victim as a gardener for the past three years, would be remanded until Aug 29, to facilitate investigations

'Selamat Hari Raya Peliwat 2.0' and 'Justice for Saiful': Guess from whom?

A grioup of around 40 men held a mini but noisy protest against Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim near the front entrance to the Jalan Duta court complex on Thursday.

The protesters held banners in support of sodomy complainant Saiful Bukhari Azlan, with the words 'Selamat Hari Raya Peliwat 2.0' and'Justice for Saiful'.  Dressed mostly in yellow T-shirts, the group also shouted anti-Anwar slogans.
