PETALING JAYA - Malaysian students in London are safe from riots that rocked Tottenham as most of them are currently back home for their summer holidays.
United Kingdom and Eire Council of Malaysian Students chairman Farquar Haqqani Fadhlullah Suhaimi said most of the Malaysian students in Britain whom he knew had already left for their break.
“Even the few students who stayed back are not living anywhere near north London,” said Farquar Haqqani who has also returned to Malaysia
He advised Malaysian students who remained in London to steer away from the “hotspots” and stay indoors until the riot area is reported to be safe.
He added that the students should contact local authorities or the Malaysian High Commission if they had any problems.
The riots, which saw several buildings and vehicles razed by a fire, had broken out following the shooting death of a 29-year-old man by the police.
Meanwhile, a Malaysian student who stayed back in central London for a summer job, said the situation was normal when she went out on Saturday night.
The student, who wished to be known as Chong, said she was quite well-prepared for incidents such as protests and riots.
“Demonstrations happen every now and then here. Sometimes, the situation can turn ugly when the demonstrators start attacking the shops like what happened a few months ago in Westminster where I live,” said Chong.
