SUNGAI PETANI (Aug 22, 2011): A student at a public institution of higher learning in Merbok here was hurt in an early morning attack today by a fellow student who slashed his neck.
Kuala Muda police chief ACP Hashim Ali said the victim, Mohd Khairil Amir Zulkifli in his 20s, was asleep in his hostel room during the 5am incident.
"We are not sure if the suspect was the victim's roommate, we are still investigating," he said toBernama when contacted here today.
He said the suspect was believed to be distressed and not in a stable state of mind.
"It is believed the suspect had just experienced a break up which could have caused the irrational behaviour," he said.
Hashim said the victim who was from Kangar, Perlis was being treated at the Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital here, while the suspect was still at large.
"We are still working on tracing the suspect and the case will be investigated as attempted murder under Section 307 of the Penal Code," he said.
The victim's father, known only as Zulkifli, said he received a call at 6.15am today about the incident.
He said his son sustained a slash wound in on the left side of his neck and is reported to be stable.
"My son told me he realised that he had been slashed upon seeing the wound in the mirror when he went to the washroom," he said
