Nurul Nuha Anwar, the second daughter to Anwar Ibrahim after Nurul Izzah, may make her debut in the next general election in the Nibong Tebal parliamentary constituency.
Yesterday, Penang PKR chief Mansor Othman confirmed the Nibong Tebal division had nominated Nuha as a potential candidate for the semi-urban mixed seat.
“Her name was raised one month ago. It is yet to be confirmed whether she is the final candidate. Everything will be announced before the general election,” Mansor was quoted as saying by Chinese language daily China Press. The Penang deputy chief minister revealed that besides people from the division, other leaders among the national leadership had also recommended for the party to field Nuha.
However, Nuha's father wrote on Twitter this morning that Nuha was not interested in the job.
Nibong Tebal PKR division chief cum Sungai Bakap state assemblyperson Ustaz Makhtar Shafie said that other potential candidates for Nibong Tebal include Chinese ethnic professionals.
“Apart from Nuha, there are also several Chinese potential candidates who are all professionals. They would contribute to local development,” he said.
Seat held by former PKR leaders
Nibong Tebal was once an Umno stronghold until it was captured by Tan Tee Beng from PKR in the 2008 general election.
Tan then quit the party to become an Independent before joining Parti Kesejahteraan Insan Tanah Air (Kita), a new party formed by former minister Zaid Ibrahim, who also resigned from PKR.
The parliamentary seat has since become the target of all three parties in Pakatan Rakyat due to its balanced racial composition of electorate - 43.60 percent Malays, 40.50 percent Chinese and 15.80 percent Indians.
Anwar has four daughters and a son. His wife Wan Azizah Wan Ismail is PKR president while the elder daughter Nurul Izzah is the MP for Lembah Pantai as well as one of four elected PKR vice-presidents.
Should Nuha, a graphic designer, contest in the next general election, she will be the fourth member from the opposition leader's family to set foot in politics.
