Caught in the act: Some of the foreign women coming out of the entertainment outlet at Tanjong Tokong on Tuesday. |
GEORGE TOWN: Many foreign women were heard making calls to their “husbands” on their mobile phones after they were arrested at an entertainment outlet in Jalan Tanjung Tokong here.
Most of the 30 guest relations officers (GROs), in their 20s and 30s, could be heard calling their lao gong (‘husband’ in Mandarin) on their mobile phones inside police vehicles.
There have been many cases of local men declaring the foreign women were their wives at the police station to get them released.
However, George Town OCPD Asst Comm Gan Kong Meng said nobody turned up at the district headquarters in Patani Road to secure the release of the 21 Vietnamese and nine Chinese nationals who were nabbed at about 11pm on Tuesday.
“Also picked up was a man, in his 30s, believed to be the outlet’s caretaker.
“The case is being investigated under Section 39 (B) of the Immigration Regulations 1963 for social visit pass violations,” he said.
ACP Gan added that the case was also being investigated under Section 55 (B) of the Immigration Act 1959/1963 for hiring and protecting foreigners.
“We will refer the investigating papers to the deputy public prosecutor once we complete our investigations.”
