married teacher is facing sex charges after being caught partially naked with one of her students. Carrie Shafer, 38, from Kentucky, resigned from her job as a biology teacher at duPont Manual High School after being arrested by police in a parked car.
An arrest report revealed the blonde mother-of-two was in a compromising position with an unnamed 17-year-old student from her school in Louisville.
Police said the windows of the car were ‘steamed up’ and both occupants were partially clothed.
They also found evidence of sex between the pair outside the car, including condoms.
The age of consent in Kentucky is 16 but Shafer is likely to face charges as the boy was a student at the school where she has taught since 2007.
Investigators said they spotted Shafer’s car in a disabled parking spot in Miles Park.
When officers approached the vehicle they noticed the windows were steamed up and both occupants were partially naked.
They also noticed a strong smell of alcohol and the teen told officers Shafer had given him beer.
Louisville Metro Police Spokesman Dwight Mitchell said more incriminating evidence was found inside the vehicle: ‘There were some articles found that appeared to have been from a sexual act – like some condoms and some wet wipes that were on the outside of the vehicle believed to have been thrown from that vehicle.’
The arrest of Shafer, who led the school’s chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, stunned staff and students at the duPont Manual High School.
Student Kyle Peterson says he heard the news from another teacher who was visibly upset: ‘A science teacher came in and told the class about her resignation and he was almost in tears because he felt bad for her.
‘She’s a good person at heart and you can really tell that in her classes. And she cares about her students.’
But police say Shafer may have cared too much for one of those students.
Shafer has been cited with unlawful transaction with a minor regarding the alcohol and illegal parking in a handicapped parking bay.
Police said when they brought charges they were unaware Shafer was a teacher and her lover a student at the school.
Officer Mitchell said: ‘There is a provision under the Sexual Abuse Act where if it’s a person whoexercises authority over an individual, in this case by it being a teacher, it could fall under that and those charges may be forthcoming.’
On the duPont Manual’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes Facebook page, they wrote that Shafer was ‘in our thoughts and prayers’, but the organization must ‘move on’.
She had worked at the school since 2007.
