The policmen cooking the cat on an improvised barbecue |
They are usually criticized for their grilling of suspects, but ten police officers from Dongguan in the southern Chinese province of Guangdong have come under fire after being seen barbecuing a cat in front of the city's public security bureau.
Members of the public told the local Southern Metropolis Daily that they saw smoke rising from among a crowd of police officers on the street and were surprised to see them cooking a cat on an improvised barbecue.
When the reporter approached the officers, one of them said they were trying to remove the cat's fur before cooking it.
Some of the officers left to avoid speaking to the reporter.
Passersby said they were angered by the incident and felt it had damaged their image of local police officers.
The public security bureau told the reporter that it has yet to establish whether those involved were actual police officers, but that it would punish those responsible if they are found to be members of the force.
