MALACCA- A Malay couple decided to join in the Chinese New Year spirit by inviting a lion dance troupe to perform at their wedding.
Md Dali Amir, 45, and Norsiah Ali, 43, also wore red and orange attires during the ceremony, which was held on the first day of the Lunar New Year.
The lion dancers from the Hiap Seng Keng temple in Pulau Gadong here performed alongside a traditional Malay kompang group during the 50m-long wedding procession to the couple's village in Kampung Pengkalan Rama Pantai.
Norsiah said the idea to include a lion dance troupe came about following a talk with her Chinese and Indian friends.
“Since my wedding is going to be held on Chinese New Year, why not have something extra special to remember my Big Day?”
Leader, Richard Lee, 35, said the troupe agreed to perform at the wedding although it was the Chinese New Year holiday break, “because the request was a little unusual”.
“We also charged a fee that was less than half we usually charge,” he said. “It was a great honour.”
