Canteen staff at a crown court are being questioned by police after lunches which are provided for judges were allegedly laced with urine.
Traces of urine are reported to have been found in soups, salads and sandwiches served up at Snaresbrook Crown Court, East London.
Food safety officers and the police are investigating after judges and barristers complained that dishes “smelled a bit off”, The Sun reported.
A private dining room known as the advocates' lounge has been closed until further notice.
Staff working there are believed to have been suspended while the investigation is completed and new temporary workers have been employed.
The meals are thought to have been supplied by Eurest Services, a division of private catering giant Compass.
Letters have reportedly been sent to judges and court staff stressing that the allegations are being taken "very seriously".
Anyone feeling ill has been urged to seek medical advice.
A source told the newspaper: "Hygiene inspectors started an investigation. People are worried there might be someone working in the kitchens with a serious grudge against the justice system.
"It has left a nasty taste in the mouth."
A Eurest spokeswoman said: "We are aware of a suspected case of food contamination and are investigating. Health and safety is our number one operational priority."
