Police deny kicking and beating up jeweller in Penang

GEORGE TOWN- Police today denied that four of its personnel had roughened up a jeweller while searching him at a shop in Jalan Perak on March 20.

Northeast district police chief, ACP Gan Kong Meng said the policemen were carrying out a routine inspection, but the man refused to cooperate until a struggle ensued.

"Our initial investigation and a closed-circuit television camera recording in a shop did not show the policemen assaulting the jeweller.

"Instead, there was a brief struggle when the policemen wanted to take him to the station for further questioning before he would be released," he toldreporters, here, today.

The 39-year-old jeweller who did not want to be identified, reportedly claimed that he was driving along Jalan Datuk Keramat when four men on motorcycles and in plainclothes who claimed to be policemen, ordered him to stop for inspection.

Due to fear, he said he continued driving towards his friend's shop in Jalan Perak, about 50 metres from the scene.

He claimed the four men followed him into the shop and kicked him, but the medical report only recorded a bruise on his left hand.

Gan said a thorough and transparent investigation would be carried out with the case being investigated under Section 323 of the Penal Code.
