KUALA LUMPUR, March 12 — Umno leaders have dismissed calls for Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil to quit her party posts, pointing out that Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail also clung on to the PKR presidency after Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was jailed for abuse of power.
Umno information chief Datuk Ahmad Maslan told reporters that Shahrizat’s family have not been found guilty of any wrongdoing but she has already decided to resign from Cabinet when her senatorship ends on April 8 while retaining leadership of Wanita Umno.
“When Anwar was jailed, Wan Azizah continued as president. They (her family) are only going to be charged, not guilty yet. So why resign?” the deputy minister said, referring to Anwar’s conviction for abuse of power in 1998 after being sacked as deputy prime minister.
