A guard at a juvenile prison found herself behind bars this week after she was caught on tape battering a teenage detainee.

Although the encounter got Shannon Linn Abbott arrested, it didn’t get her fired. The 33-year-old bailed out and was back on the job right afterward and supervising children, to the extreme dismay of the Department of Juvenile Justice.

On Tuesday, a DJJ administrator formally asked the privately managed youth prison’s director to remove the guard from all access to children.

“It is our expectation, at the very least, that this staff member will have no contact with youth in any of our programs,” wrote Laura K. Moneyham, a DJJ assistant secretary.

The incident marks the third time in recent years that workers at a Florida juvenile justice lockup have been videotaped while abusing or neglecting a child in state custody.

PETALING JAYA - Mixed martial arts fighter Ray Elbe is used to being kicked and punched for a living but nothing prepared him for one of the most excruciating injuries of his life "fracturing" his penis.

The 30-year-old American, who now teaches Brazilian jiu-jitsu and mixed martial arts at a studio in Ara Damansara here, suffered the injury while having sex with his girlfriend on Dec 3.

He also talked about his painful experience on YouTube.

SINGAPORE - WHILE he was hosting a friend's birthday party in his Commonwealth Drive flat in August, a guest made a remark that offended him.

Vikneswaran Ruvy, 24, had asked Mr Rathkershahan Ananthan, 51, to perform oral sex on him.

This remark and subsequent events led to Mr Rathkershahan's death after he was beaten up by Vikneswaran and his 22-year-old brother, Dinesh Kumar Ruvy.

The brothers were charged with murder on Aug24. But the charge was reduced to voluntarily causing hurt on Friday.

They were jailed for six months after pleading guilty.

When BN lost its long-held two-thirds majority of seats in Parliament, many blamed Khairy Jamaluddin and his father-in-law Abdullah Badawi, who was then the prime minister and president of UMNO, the dominant party in the ruling coalition.

None of the UMNO-BN leaders and supporters would admit that it performed badly because it had become rotten to the core, eroded and corroded by corruption, greed and infighting. No, UMNO members who were used to decades of 'lording' it had to find a 'mega-scapegoat'. There was no talk at all of self-examination, self-review or self-cleansing and rejuvenation. From branch to division to the central leadership, UMNO leaders screamed for blood - it was not their fault and someone would have to take the blame.

And that person was Badawi, who to be fair did very little but nap at meetings while his son-in-law called the shots and allegedly scurried away a handsome fortune. But the point here is the blame game - this is how UMNO cleanses itself. It only knows how to sweep dirt under the carpet and that's why it continues to stay dirt-filled and infectious. So when the next crisis comes, Malaysians should not be shocked if UMNO ferrets out another 'scapegoat', no matter how highly-placed that person might now be.

THE plot on the fall of former People's Action Party MP Michael Palmer thickened yesterday as it emerged that the woman he had an affair with was concurrently dating another man.

Former People's Association staffmember Laura Ong, 33, was in a serious relationship with logistics manager Andy Lim, even as she was seeing Mr Palmer, The Straits Times has learnt from sources close to her.

Mr Palmer had announced he was quitting as MP and PAP member at a press conference on Wednesday, after admitting to the affair.

Mr Lim, who is in his early 30s, now finds himself at the centre of speculation that Mr Palmer may have decided to resign as MP after a third party sent compelling evidence of his extramarital relationship to a news outlet and possibly other individuals.
