Christian Todd Slaton, a 19-year-old University of Montevallo student, faces four felony charges of first degree animal cruelty for allegedly dismembering stray cats and displaying their bodies around the Alabama liberal arts college's campus, the Associated Press reports.

Slaton is charged with leaving one cat carcass near the university president's residence, one near a prominent campus statue and stringing another up a flag pole for display. He posted $5,000 bond on each of the charges and is scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 12.

University spokesman Jamie Bessette told the AP that Slaton was suspended on Oct. 31 and barred from campus once police identified him as a suspect in the cat killings. That day, Al.com, a state news website, reported campus officials were tight-lipped and only acknowledged that the cats were dying of unnatural causes.

Bessette told Al.com that the first cat was found on Oct. 16, and the others were reported days apart.

Students said the deaths were "creepy and cruel," according to AI.com. Sophomore Andronikia Ward told the site, "Somebody on this campus has a problem, and they need to be checked out."

University of Montevallo Chief of Police Chadd Adams said in a statement, "We are very relieved that this situation has come to a close. I am proud of the work of our officers and of the vigilance of our community throughout this investigation."
