Sex in jail: Prison boss behind bars

A prison governor in the UK is behind bars after being found guilty of having a sexual relationship with a woman inmate.

Russell Thorne, 41, demanded sex from the prisoner in return for giving her sweets, biscuits, Nescafe Gold Blend coffee and yogurt.

She had fallen in love with Thorne,  but was terrified of losing her perks or being transferred if she refused him.

If Anwar Ibrahim goes to jail the opposition will have to find a leader 'sufficiently credible and respectable' to become the rallying point. Who will this be?

Anwar Ibrahim behind bars is as much a problem as he is outside. It will still cause Barisan Nasional so many seats.

So the question is, how do we deal with Anwar?

Anwar’s good fortune is brought about by Umno’s incompetence. It mishandled the sex video clip issue.

It should not have given a semblance of involvement in the video. We should have let this Shazryl Eskay Abdullah chap do it by himself.

But the Umno president (Najib Tun Razak) felt compelled to meet up with Rahim Tamby Chik and Shuib Lazim, thereby giving the impression that Umno is involved.

Umno has implied knowledge about it then, if not direct. Umno multiplied its stupidity by releasing the clips involving Mat Sabu and the latest about Johari Abdul (who watched the sex video implicating Anwar).

Who are the ignoramuses surrounding the Umno president?

The proximity of sequential releases of the clips would now suggest that only an organisation with sufficient clout and resources can muster all the sideshows.

All 20 fingers and toes point toward Umno.

How do we deal with Anwar? It’s not about doing something to save Umno. It’s about doing something to save the country.

Anwar and all interested parties have to think about placing the country in capable hands now.

The irony is, the answer in dealing with Anwar for the purpose of saving the country lies with Anwar himself.

Unfortunately, Anwar has no place in the equation for now at least.

The best solution is for him to give up the de facto leadership of the opposition in preference to someone else with the respectable clout.

I wrote some time ago, and I wasn’t joking about it, that perhaps the best way for Anwar to hasten the downfall of the Barisan Nasional government is to allow himself to be jailed.

Then the government will fall and if he is jailed before the downfall, he will be out in no time.

By mid-July, Anwar will know his fate. Judging from the case being built up against him, he is likely to be the government’s “special guest”.

What will happen then?

There will be a leadership vacuum in the opposition group. Anwar has been the unifying factor. He is a crowd puller but not necessarily a vote puller.

If that happens, the opposition parties will have to look for a leadership material sufficiently credible and respectable to become the rallying point.

That person has to step up to assume the mantle of leadership to save this country from gross mismanagement, fraudulent management, corruption, widening income disparities, re-organise institutions of governance, dispensing justice, stemming corruption and all that.

Who can that be?

Face Behind The Name: Meet Iurii Chumak, Alleged Flight Attendant Groper

Meet Iurii Chumak.

The 53-year-old was arrested last month after allegedly groping a flight attendant while onboard a British Airways flight traveling from London to New York. Chumak, seen in the mug shot at right, was photographed by the United States Marshals Service after being forcibly de-planed in handcuffs.

According to the FBI, Chumak placed his hand up the flight attendant’s skirt and “grabbed her genital area” when she bent over to pour coffee for another passenger. Although the incident was witnessed by a second flight attendant, who immediately placed him in restraints, Chumak maintained that he had simply been “drinking on the airplane, fell asleep, and woke up in restraints.”

Since his bust, Chumak has been locked up at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn. He was named last week in a misdemeanor criminal information charging him in connection with the in-flight April 28 incident (the filing of an information--in lieu of a grand jury presentment by federal prosecutors--often indicates that a defendant is negotiating a guilty plea).

Chumak’s lawyer, Sergei Orel, declined today to comment about his client’s case.

Story Behind Teen's YouTube Rape Plea

MAY 16--The Florida teenager who posted an emotional YouTube video describing her alleged rape gave police a troubling account of her relationship with a 23-year-old man who recently was cleared of sexually assaulting the girl. 

In police interviews, the 16-year-old girl, identified only as Crystal in her video, describes meeting Casey Mundling, 23, at a party in mid-2007. At that point, while still 15, Crystal began having sex with Mundling, she told investigators. The teenager's claims were recorded during an interview with an Orange County Sheriff's Office detective last November (a transcript from that session can be found below).

Crystal also provided a handwritten statement describing her months-long relationship with Mundling, whom she accused of "always getting me drunk, high on cocaine and pills" before they had sex. A sheriff's report notes that Crystal told investigators that when she quarreled with Mundling he threatened to harm her and her family if "she said anything to anyone." Crystal added that she was transported to a local hospital last June "because she was upset and tried to commit suicide."

Based on Crystal's statements, Mundling, pictured in the mug shot at left, was arrested last November and charged with lewd or lascivious battery, a felony. Since she was a minor at the outset of the couple's relationship, prosecutors contended that Crystal could not legally consent to sexual intercourse.

But records indicate that prosecutors were far from gung-ho in pursuing a prosecution of Mundling. Included in documents released by the State Attorney's office are a prosecutor's notationsfrom March indicating that Crystal's father "wants this to be prosecuted. I really don't know the reason. He has full knowledge of [his daughter's] lifestyle and his is similar." A late-2007 e-mail from prosecutor Nicole Pegues to a sheriff's detective notes, none-too-enthusiastically, "I guess I have to charge this case."

Citing "prosecutorial discretion," Pegues eventually declined to file a case against Mundling "due to the consensual nature of the sexual encounter" and the fact that Crystal "was a mere 1 month from her 16th birthday" when she began having sex with him.

Earlier this month, after Crystal and her father learned of Pegues's decision, the teenager recorded and posted her YouTube video, which can be found above. In that clip, Crystal--for the first time--claims that she was raped by Mundling. In her prior police statements, she repeatedly told probers that the sex was consensual and that, "I wanted a guy in my life 'cause my mom's boyfriends have never been there for me. And my dad wasn't there so I thought alright he's older maybe he'll respect me, but it didn't go like that."

During a contentious May 5 conversation with a prosecutor, records show, Crystal's father was "only concerned w/threats (UTube, press, etc.)" and "indicated he will sue." (14 pages)
