Spring cleaning one’s room is similar to embarking on a treasure hunt, unearthing precious items lurking under the bed or in the dark corners of a closet. During one such recent endeavour, I stumbled upon two books, and sandwiched between them, was the mangled remains of a cockroach.

It is not certain if an unfortunate accident had befallen the cockroach in a case of being at the wrong place at the wrong time or if the poor creature was the victim of a cold-blooded murder.

As for the two books enveloped in a blanket of dust, one was Niccolo Machiavelli’s The Prince. It is a political treatise penned centuries ago but still relevant. It speaks of tyrannical statecraft and reminded me of Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

The second book was Paolo Coelho’s The Alchemist, which narrates the travails of a shepherd in search of his personal legend. This reminded me of Anwar Ibrahim.

Just mind Shahrizat's cows, Muhyiddin!

A remark by deputy prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin questioning the solution to the mini storm in the Kedah state exco invited sharp rebukes from PAS deputy president Mohamad Sabu and secretary general Mustafa Ali.

“There's no need for him to over-react. It is enough that he takes care of Shahrizat's cows," Mustafa said in his short reaction when asked by Harakahdaily, referring to Wanita UMNO head Shahrizat Abdul Jalil, whose family company National Feedlot Corporation has been locked in a protracted controversy over revelations of financial abuse involving public funds. Muhyiddin was the Agriculture minister when the RM250 million cattle-rearing project was awarded to the NFC helmed by Shahrizat's husband and children.

KUALA LUMPUR, March 4 — Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin said although the prime minister admitted Barisan Nasional’s (BN) mistakes, “there is no need to list out our weaknesses; that is in the past”.

“What is more important is in front, in the next 10, 20 years and as the prime minister said, we are ready to improve ourselves and improve on what we have already accomplished such as the national transformation programmes, which includes the economy, government, politics, rural issues and new measures taken by the prime minister and the government, which have an effective impact.

“The people have accepted the concept of 1 Malaysia and there is a new feeling of confidence in Barisan Nasional among the people,” Muhyiddin told reporters after the launch of the World Kidney Day here at Dataran Merdeka......

Muhyiddin uses race card, urges Malays to reject Pakatan

Umno deputy president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin exploited the race card tonight when he urged Umno to defend the Malay race, culture and institutions from the opposition Pakatan Rakyat (PR).

Hitting out at the DAP in particular, he accused the PR party of being an anti-Islam and anti-Malay force.

Muhyiddin (picture)also dismissed PKR as a spent force interested only in championing the cause of one man, and PAS as a party that had shed its Islamic ideology to please the DAP.

"I won't respond in a way that will divide me and my deputy. In Malaysia, that can be very dangerous. People will say, look here, the prime minister and his deputy are not on the same page," Najib said in answer to a question from the audience.

When BN MPs turn to Muhyiddin for extra funding, it bodes ill for Najib

When it came out in the press that 100 Barisan Nasional MPs had gone to see Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin for funding for their constituencies, there were many who wondered why didn't they approach Prime Minister Najib Razak, who is also BN chairman. Najib is also the Finance minister and the all-powerful UMNO president. So why not him, why Muhyiddin?

Some of Najib's supporters say if the request was made to him, it might be 'controversial' especially if he dishes out money to the Barisan Nasional MPs, he might be accused of using national money to fund BN campaigns. But surely, everyone knows this has been happening all the while, so why the sudden coyness?

Then there were those who claimed the Prime Minister was too busy finding ways to shore up the country's battered economy while keeping his political minders in UMNO happy. The nation’s coffers are drying up fast and income generation is slow and lagging behind other countries such as Vietnam and Indonesia. And as the US wrangles with its own debt problems, analyst expect the ripples from this fiasco to hit world economies hard. So Najib has no time for BN MPs. Does that make sense?

M'sians see end of the road for Najib, but fear 'racial' Muhyiddin

The feelings for Prime Minister Najib Razak are mixed. There were some people who believed that Najib should continue as president of UMNO while many more see his career as "finished".

It is surprising to see that a hawker, a lecturer, a lawyer, a teacher and an IT analysis shared the same idea that Najib has to go, while a Malay professional and a BN leader think Najib is still the best man amongst the lot to continue as UMNO president and PM of Malaysia.
