Rebels shoot dead five in Indian election violence

NEW DELHI - Rebels shot dead five people at a polling station in India's northeast on Saturday as voting began in the first of five local elections seen as a popularity test for the national Congress government.

The separatist rebels sprayed the voting booth with bullets, killing three election officials, a paramilitary trooper and a civilian in Thangpi, a village south of Manipur state capital Imphal, police chief Priya Singh said.

"The militants opened random fire," Singh told AFP, adding two other people were hurt in the attack which came despite tens of thousands of security forces deployed in a bid to thwart attacks during the voting for a new assembly.

Five fall 16m in Vietnam roller coaster accident

At 11.30am yesterday, five people stared death in the face when the amusement park ride they were on malfunctioned, causing the seats they were strapped in to to free-fall for 16 metres.

The accident happened Tuesday at the Van Huong Mai Amusement Park in Chau Phu district in the southern province of An Giang.

Mother of five detained over investment scam

The police reveal that local women are being used by Nigerian syndicates, and while the paper trail lands the women in court, the foreigners walk free.

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have detained three local women, including a mother of five, and seven Nigerians in connection with an internet investment scam.

The housewife in her mid-40s was arrested after police checked her bank account and discovered that there were transactions amounting to more than RM400,000 for the first half of this year.
