A suburban Chicago man thought he had the perfect chick magnet in his pet alligator. Authorities only saw a dangerous animal.
The Associated Press (AP) reports that Deywayne Yarbrough from Ford Heights, Illinois was arrested after police received an anonymous tip that he was keeping the 4ft-long creature in confined conditions in his kitchen.
Yarbrough told Cook County sheriff's investigators he kept the alligator in a small tank and fed it only 10 live mice a month to keep it from growing too large.
He said he bought the gator five years ago in Indiana for US$200 (RM580).
When questioned about the animal, Yarbrough claimed that he had been keeping it to try and impress women.
The alligator has now been removed by the Animal Welfare League, following which it will be given to the Chicago Herpetological Society.
Yarbrough has been arrested and charged with possession of a dangerous animal, and is due in court on July 5.
