KUALA LUMPUR: He was just asking for a cigarette and scolded a man when his request was turned down.
But the physically challenged man was beaten up with a cane by the annoyed man in the vicinity of a club in Sungai Besi near here at about 11am on Saturday.
The 59-year-old victim never regained consciousness for six days until he died at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital here at about 10am yesterday, said Kuala Lumpur CID chief Datuk Ku Chin Wah.
He said based on an initial report from the hospital, the disabled man died of a lung infection but the police were still awaiting an autopsy report to ascertain the cause of his death.
"A man, angered at being scolded by the disabled man, took out a cane from the bonnet of his car and hit the victim many times," Ku told reporters at the hospital here today after visiting a policeman who was injured while chasing two suspected snatch thieves.
A brother of the disabled victim had lodged a police report on the incident.
Ku said a suspect had been arrested and remanded to assist in investigations into the case.
Police did not rule out the possibility that the victim was attacked by a man who was under the influence of alcohol, he said.
