Authorities stood by while woman was beaten

SINGAPORE - A video of a Chinese woman being beaten mercilessly by a group of Chinese men has caused an uproar among Chinese netizens.
In the video, a mixed group of men and women enter a building lobby. allegedly that of a KTV lounge. Suddenly, a commotion ensues as a man and a woman start struggling.
The pair trade punches and while the woman's companions are restrained by the other men in the background. Other men continue landing punches on the first woman and kicking her.
A man in a red uniform then intervenes and tries to break up the fight, but to no avail. The beating continues for a few minutes until the man is persuaded by his companions to leave.
Chinese website ChinaSmack reported that the woman suffered broken bones and was later sent to the hospital with other injuries.
Readers from the Chinese website had varied reactions towards the video. Some said that the men had molested the women, and that it was only right for the women to defend themselves.
Others said that the women had probably done something to deserve the beating.
However, other readers said that the the authorities did nothing while the incident was going on in broad daylight and that such was the culture of China.
Some readers also quoted the infamous 'Li Gang' incident, where the son of a police chief sped off after knocking down a pedestrian with his car, shouting his father's name as he escaped.
Another ChinaSmack reader commented along the same lines. The reader said that men in the video were members of the local traffic police who had gotten drunk and abused their power by molesting the women.
