A 22-year-old Singaporean student died after plummeting 16 storeys from a luxury high-rise apartment in New York on Sunday evening.
Samantha Kwek had apparently quarrelled with her boyfriend, who lived in the building that was located in the diplomatic district of Manhattan.
According to the New York Post, Kwek had threatened to kill herself in several text messages she had exchanged with her boyfriend Benjamin Small, 30.
Police reportedly found a suicide note.
The Columbia University student was fully clothed, according to an eye-witness. She was wearing a coat and had grey Ugg boots on.
She was also described to have long, black hair.
The Daily Mail reported that she landed on East 48th Street in front the United Nations headquarters across the street from the Algerian Embassy.
While it is unknow if the case has been classified as unnatural death, Chinese evening daily Shin Min reported that her brother-in-law Vincent Campanella does not believe Kwek would commit suicide.
Campanella said Kwek was supposed to celebrate Lunar New Year with the family on Jan 29 but did not show up.
Describing Kwek as strong and smart, he said the news came as a shock to everyone.
He said: "It's very hard for all of us to believe.
"She's not one to be attached to a guy like that."
