MORE and more medical students are turning to prostitution to pay their way through university, it was claimed yesterday.
One in ten wannabe doctors has a friend who sells sex to meet rocketing tuition and living costs.
That's up from just four per cent in 2000 and six per cent in 2006.
The Student British Medical Journal fears students may be attracted to a life of vice by Billie Piper's ITV2 hit Secret Diary of a Call Girl in which she "oozes glamour and sophistication" as a high-class hooker.
Youngsters ignore the perils of prostitution as they struggle with debts of £30,000 to £50,000 over a five-year course.
The burden could soar to £70,000 next year as fees increase.
niversity of Birmingham medical student Jodi Dixon said in an article for the journal: "For students to think they have no choice but to resort to prostitution is unacceptable."
An anonymous male student said he was faced with the choice of prostitution or dropping out of medical school.
Sarah Walker, of the English Collective of Prostitutes, said: "Jobs in shops and pubs are increasingly scarce and low paid.
"We have been contacted by increasing numbers of students considering prostitution or who are already involved."
General Medical Council spokeswoman Clare Owen said she was unaware of any medical student facing action for working as a prostitute.
STUDENT D moved to the UK to study medicine — but soon found he could not afford it.
He decided to work as an escort rather than quit his studies.
D went on the internet to seek clients. His first date was a middle-aged businesswoman seeking a pleasant "no strings" evening with an attractive young man.
He has been on more than 50 dates in the 15 months since and averages three a month.
D told the Student British Medical Journal he has a flat and his own car and is comfortable financially.
He believes his escort work is legal. And D does not expect to be disciplined by medical authorities because he does not think they can show his activities will harm patient care.
