RAWANG: More than hundred people turned up to pay their respects to P Balasubramaniam, better known as PI Bala, at his home in Taman Pelangi, here this afternoon.

The last rites for the private investigator, who died from a heart attack yesterday, began at noon and the cortege left for the Cheras crematorium at about 1.30pm.

Bala leaves behind a wife Sentamilselvi, 43, and three children Kishen, 16, Menaga, 14 and Rishi, 11. A distraught Sentamilselvi, 43 fainted when the cortege left his home.

Family of girl attacks sex offender

DISGRACED former MP Terry Martin, convicted of sex acts with a 12-year-old girl, was yesterday attacked by female relatives of the child as he walked free from court after being convicted of possessing child pornography.

The former long-standing Tasmanian upper house MP and mayor was attacked outside the Supreme Court in Hobart by two women, understood to be the aunt and grandmother of his victim.

World’s Biggest Family – Man with 39 Wives, 94 Children, 33 Grandchildren

 He is head of the world’s biggest family – and says he is ‘blessed’  to have his 39 wives. Ziona Chana also has 94 children, 14-daughters-in-law and 33 grandchildren.  They live in a 100-room, four story house set amidst the hills of Baktwang village in the Indian state of Mizoram, where the wives sleep in giant communal dormitories.

“I consider myself a lucky man to be the husband of 39 women and head of the world’s largest family.” The family is organized with almost military discipline, with the oldest wife Zathiangi organizing her fellow partners to perform household chores such as cleaning, washing and preparing meals. 

One evening meal can see them pluck 30 chickens, peel 132lb of potatoes and boil up to 220lb of rice. Coincidentally, Mr Chana is also head of a sect that allows members to take as many wives as he wants. He even married ten women in one year, when he was at his most prolific, and enjoys his own double bed while his wives have to make do with communal dormitories.

He keeps the youngest women near to his bedroom with the older members of the family sleeping further away – and there is a rotation system for who visits Mr Chana’s bedroom. Rinkmini, one of Mr Chana’s wives who is 35 years old, said: ‘We stay around him as he is the most important person in the house. He is the most handsome person in the village. She says Mr Chana noticed her on a morning walk in the village 18 years ago and wrote her a letter asking for her hand in marriage. Another of his wives, 

Huntharnghanki, said the entire family gets along well. The family system is reportedly based on “mutual love and respect.” And Mr Chana, whose religious sect has 4,000 members, says he has not stopped looking for new wives. ’To expand my sect, I am willing to go even to the U.S. to marry,’ he said. One of his sons insisted that Mr Chana, whose grandfather also had many wives, marries the poor women from the village so he can look after them.

Girl abused by family friend for 7 years

FOR more than seven years, from when she was eight, a girl was sexually abused over and over by a temple medium whom her parents regarded as a close family friend.

He was a 'spiritual adviser' to the child's father, who was also a temple medium.


They trusted him so much that they let him sleep in their flat on many occasions, during which time he would abuse the child.

After the couple divorced, the girl's mother left her daughter alone with him and even let him have her stay in his flat during school holidays.

Yesterday, the man, now 59, admitted to multiple charges of sexually abusing the girl, now 16 years old, and was jailed for 24 years.

Married with four children aged 18 to 23, he will not be caned as he is above the age of 50.

Looking skinny and dishevelled in court, the former coffee shop assistant faced 44 charges for offences dating from January 2001 to May last year.

Because of the years of continual abuse, said Deputy Public Prosecutor Gordon Oh, the child had grown into a teenager who hated herself, mutilated her body and was promiscuous.

'That the victim's own mother would unwittingly send her own daughter into the lion's den was only possible because the accused had shamelessly betrayed the trust bestowed upon him by the victim's family,' said the prosecutor.

The High Court heard that the girl's father and the man got to know each other in 2000, when they were mediums in a Chinese temple and also did odd jobs for the same employer.
He became a close family friend - called 'uncle' by the victim and her three younger sisters - and was regularly invited to sleep over at the family's four-room flat.

In early 2001, while he was watching TV with the girl and her younger sister, he began stroking the younger girl's leg. When she moved away, he turned his attention to the victim, who responded by hugging him.


The touching became more frequent and one night, he took her into the study where he slept and raped her. No one heard her cries and he told her not to tell anyone about it.

He carried on raping her at her parents' flat.

After the couple divorced in 2004, the girl moved into a rented flat with her mother. But her rapist remained in her life when her mother let him babysit her while she worked.

Her three other sisters lived with their father.

By 2006, the rapist was having the teenager stay in his flat during the school holidays.
If she refused to go over when he summoned her, he would have her mother send her.

The abuse became more depraved. On one weekend in June 2006, he violated the then 13-year-old with a banana despite her protests. He then sodomised her and stopped only when she kicked him.

Then in February last year, he violated her with a stick used to strike a bell during prayers.

The abuse came to light a few months later, in July, when the girl confided in an aunt. It was only then that her parents learnt of her ordeal. They went with her the next day to make a police report.

Yesterday, the man pleaded for leniency, saying he was remorseful and in anguish every day. Citing his age and poor health, he asked for a 'reasonable sentence' so that he could spend the rest of his years peacefully with his family.

He pleaded guilty to five counts of rape, one count of committing an indecent act on a child, one count of sodomy and two counts of sexual assault of a minor. The rest of the charges were taken into consideration during sentencing.

Family argument ends in murder

GEORGE TOWN: A heated family argument about financial matters led to the murder of a 42-year-old businessman early yesterday.

K. Gobinathan was stabbed and beaten up repeatedly by at least five assailants, believed to be his relatives, outside a house in Lorong Kulit, just past midnight.

A police spokesman said the group confronted Gobinathan and a heated argument ensued.

He said the argument turned violent and escalated into a brawl, resulting in Gobinathan being attacked with parang and sticks.

"The victim tried to put up a fight but was overpowered. He suffered head injuries and multiple stab wounds," the police spokesman said.

A witness, who declined to be identified, said the assailants also smashed the victim's motorcycle and the windscreen of another car parked nearby. They also damaged the victim's house.

Gobinathan's body was dumped by the roadside outside a car showroom in Jalan Masjid Negeri about 3.30am.

"We believe the victim was dragged to the showroom," he said.

The body was sent to Penang Hospital for a post-mortem.

Gobinathan married a teacher, in her 30s, last year, and his relationship with several of his relatives turned sour shortly after due to family squabbles.

Police have identified three suspects, two of whom are the victim's relatives.
