Jeyakumar: Detention was horrible

Unknown | 12:11 PM | | | Best Blogger Tips

The PSM leader recalls his 28-day ordeal and speaks about his party’s plans for the next election and its relationship with Pakatan Rakyat.
KUALA LUMPUR: Despite the grassroots popularity that he and his party enjoy, Dr Michael D Jeyakumar does not want Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) to scramble for seats to contest in the coming general election.
“It is important for the opposition to be united,” he told FMT. “We do not want to split votes or cause three-cornered fights. We also don’t want to be the cause of any fights within the opposition.”

The EO-6 have finally been released after 28 days of detention following strenuous efforts by Parti Sosialis Malaysia members, NGOs and friends including Pakatan Rakyat supporters to pressure the police and Home Ministry to free them.
No reasons were given and the Star reported the Inspector General of Police as saying it is up to the Attorney-General to decide on the next course of action.
"Yes, it is confirmed. We need to get rid of all the oppressive laws, EO, ISA, OSA and PPPA because this case has highlighted how they can be abused. But before that, the BN government and the police must apologise to the EO-6 and their families," PKR legal affairs director Latheefa Koya told Malaysia Chronicle.

The EO is an oppressive law that allows the government the right to imprison victims without trial for indefinite periods of time, often years. In the runup to the July 9, Jeyakumar and 5 other PSM members were arrested for rekindling Communism and waging war against the King.
