Barisan Nasional’s two biggest component parties – Umno and MCA – are showing clear signs of desperation for fear of losing their mandate to rule.

MIC too is starting to show small signs of life but organizing rowdy fist-fights and suggesting lie-detector tests will not endear itself or BN to voters either.

After more than 50 years of governance, the three are clearly running amok – resorting to all sorts of dirty tricks, featuring lies, double talk, threats, violence and irrational political behaviour like influencing the police to selectively ignore the safety of duly elected representatives from the Opposition and the rakyat (citizens).

MAY 14 — Much has been made of the so-called 100,000 turnout of Umno members at the Bukit Jalil Stadium to observe Umno’s 66th anniversary celebrations. Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Razak was obviously elated in seeing the sea of Umno members dressed in red that greeted him on his arrival at the stadium.

He remarked that they, too, can bring in the crowds. And he was jubilant thinking that support for Umno had returned. You can’t fault him for being carried away by the euphoria of the occasion.

But little does he realise that his optimism was misplaced.

Umno hits the panic button with Perkasa-led Malay meet

Now, we have heard it all. Two Muslims from Umno with Indian roots, de-facto prime minister Mahathir Mohamad (Malayalee) and Zainuddin Mydin (Tamil), met in secret in Putrajaya on Mon with 250 other Perkasa diehards led by Ibrahim Ali the motor mouth.

They were also joined by the Tamil-speaking Sanusi Junid, a one time Menteri Besar of Kedah who claims to be an Acehnese, and former deputy federal minister Khalid Yunus.

The secrecy surrounding the meet, according to Mahathir in the media, was to prevent it being labelled as one of racists. He lamented that one could no longer mention the word Malay without being labelled a racist. Indeed, members of Malay-speaking communities in Peninsular Malaysia – Mahathir being a case in point – are not Malay at all.

Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim has landed himself an unexpected exponent in the wake of several hard-hitting interviews by self-exiled blogger Raja Petra Kamarudin.

In the interviews Raja Petra had branded Anwar “unfit” to be the next Prime Minister, alluded that Anwar was guilty of the sodomy charge and expressed certainty that Anwar was the man featured in the sex video.

But the waves created by his verbal attacks could very well change direction now that a former Umno Cabinet Minister’s endorsement of Anwar’s suitability as Malaysia’s leader.

Umno has not made any effective improvements since Election 2008 general and is unable to garner support from Malays, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamed has said ahead of the party’s general assembly at the end of the month. 

The party’s longest-serving president was quoted by its newspaper Utusan Malaysia today saying Umno currently lacked good, credible leaders and that it was a pale shadow of its former glory. 

“Umno became badly damaged when Tun Abdullah Badawi took over. Because he prioritised his family and there were so many corruption allegations. And everyone knew about his son-in-law’s involvement,” he said, referring to Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin.

It looks like the Pakatan Rakyat opposition may be right. Umno is really starting to lose it. Its traditional Malay electorate is beginning to see the party as it is and no longer as it was.

In the past due to its awesome power, Malays flocked to join the party, hoping to tap into its huge gravy train. Spurred by the racial politicking of the top Umno leadership, many ordinary Malays stayed on in the party, even though they knew they were unlikely to make it to the higher ranks. Total membership is said to number 3 million these days, the largest political grouping in the country.

But that may have been the peak for the Malay nationalist party. Not only have Malays become more emancipated by education, many are beginning to feel disgust in place of the trust they once held.

Hasan Ali will stay in PAS, don't listen to Umno

Following Selangor exco member Hasan Ali's denial that he would join Umno, Selangor PAS commissioner Dr Abd Rani Osman has expressed faith in his comrade, dismissing the rumour as a gimmick by the rival party.

“Based on the commitment to the party's struggle demonstrated (by Hasan) so far, it (joining Umno) will not become a reality.

“I think it is a tune played by a certain party, and we don't have to dance to it,” he said in a text message to Malaysiakini last night.
