As expected, RCI cops out: Beng Hock committed suicide

As expected, the Royal Commission of Inquiry, in an unanimous decision, found that Teoh Beng Hock had been driven to commit suicide by “aggressive, relentless, oppressive and unscrupulous” interrogation by three MACC officers.

But tough-sounding the RCI's words may be, it was a cop out on justice due to the 30-year-old Selangor political officer. This way, the RCI hopes to satisfy his family without having to bring to book the MACC officers involved.

"He was felt pressured and stressed as a result of continuous interrogation techniques," Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Nazri Aziz told reporters on Monday.

Fireman Who Was Suspended for Posing Topless on Charity Calendar Commits Suicide

A fire-fighter who was disciplined for posing shirtless on a charity calendar has committed suicide, it was announced today.

John Slivinski was found dead at his Lawndale, Philadelphia home on Saturday, with Police and colleagues saying the cause was suicide.

It is not known why he took his own life.

In April the 31-year-old former Marine was suspended from the city’s prestigious ‘Rescue One’ unit after posing topless for a national fund-raising calendar.

Fire bosses were angry the popular fire man – despite his plans to donate the money to a widow’s fund – had not gone through the chain of command – instead only asking permission of his union boss Billy Gault.

A petition with 1000 signatures of support was collected before the hearing.

But in May he was let off with a verbal reprimand, and allowed back to his old job.

The suicide has left former colleagues stunned, with several saying they don’t understand why he took his own life.

Speaking to the Philadelphia Metro, local 22 fire president Bill Gault said: ‘There were no outward signs.

‘We never saw the guy not smiling. It’s so baffling.’

Former Marine friend Kate Rizzo – who met Slivinski at Camp Pendleton from 1998 to 1999, said the fight for his job hit him hard.

She said: ‘I know this whole thing hit him pretty hard, with the calender.

‘I think that really pushed him over the edge.’

A Facebook tribute page was flooded with messages of shock and condolence at the tragic death.

A fellow calendar participant Mr Charlotte, aka Tommy DeFrancisci, wrote: ‘Rest in peace Mr. Philly, you will be missed. Semper Fi – Mr. Charlotte.’

Lenny Daigle, another calendar entrant wrote:  I’m a Firefighter in New Orleans.

‘This calendar that we are working on is a great project that will help worthwhile causes across the country.

‘I didn’t know Jack and regret that I’ll never meet him. We would have in August.

‘He was contributing to a good cause and deserved the support that our respective Departments have shown the rest of us. R.I.P Jack Lenny Daigle, Mr New Orleans.’

Speaking to the Philadelphia enquirer, Mike Kane – executive board member at the local Fire-fighters Union – said: ‘If you or your family members were in danger, this was the kid you’d want showing up at your house.

‘He gave you 110 percent, whether he was washing dishes or going down a smoky hallway.

‘When I heard yesterday morning, I had to sit down. It took my legs out.’

The calendar, which is due to be published this summer, will go ahead.

Publisher Katherine Kostreva said she would let the family decide whether Slivinski’s picture as Mr May would still appear.

Blogger who said only ACS(I) boys worth dating arrested: She threatened suicide

Jiang Lai, 23, the local blogger who shot to internet fame after she commented that only ACS(I) boys are worth dating, is now in trouble with the police. On May 13, she threatened to kill herself at a hotel and was arrested.

According to a report in The New Paper today (May 24), the blogger had tried to check in at the Fairmont Singapore for a week's stay on May 13. However, when she was asked to place a deposit, she created a ruckus at the hotel and even threatened to commit suicide at one point. Later, she also started mumbling incoherently.

Police said they received a call at 9.05pm on May 13, requesting assistance at a hotel located at Bras Basah Road. A 23-year-old woman was subsequently arrested and later referred to the Institute of Mental Health (IMH).

Miss Jiang also had a police report lodged against her earlier, after she allegedly threatened on her blog to pour acid on a woman's face on May 7. A police spokesperson has confirmed this, and the case has been classified as attempted extortion, with investigations still ongoing.

Psychiatrists believe that Miss Jiang's vindictive and angry blog entries were a cry for attention and help, and that she could also be suffering from borderline personality disorder. She may need some professional help, they advised.

"People with borderline personality disorder often feel insecure, inadequate and behave impulsively and irrationally at times," said Dr Ang Yong Guan, a consultant psychiatrist at Paragon Medical.

Miss Jiang claimed that she studied at Reed College, a liberal arts college in Portland, Oregon, USA, but checks have revealed that she last attended classes there from January to May 2010 and is currently not enrolled as a student.

She also said she had consulted a lawyer who agreed to waive his legal fees to represent her against some people she wanted to sue for defamation, but the lawyer had yet to agree to take on her case and had made no mention of waiving his fees at the time of her blog posting. The lawyer did not take up her case in the end, checks revealed.

Miss Jiang has been in the limelight a number of times since her first controversial comment about ACS(I) boys. She also suggested holding aschoolboy 'talent pageant' and later boasted of her uncle who is chief of a television network in China.
