SHAH ALAM: Police have arrested a suspect in connection with the murder of 19-year-old Nurul Awathif Mohd Shakir, whose body was found burned and dumped by the roadside near a sewage pond in Ampang.
The suspect, a 19-year-old student pursuing a degree in landscaping, was picked up outside a university in Sri Iskandar, Perak, on Monday after a police special task force tracked him down.
Selangor police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Tun Hisan Tun Hamzah said the suspect had known the victim.
He said police had also confiscated a Perodua Kancil and a handphone belonging to the suspect.
“We have also identified the station where he bought the petrol to burn the victim,” he told reporters at the police headquarters here yesterday.
On Sept 4, Nurul Awathif, the second of five siblings, did not return home after she went out to meet a friend at 8pm.
Her charred remains were found the following day near a sewage pond in Kampung Lembah Jaya Utara.
