Police to probe why women were 'branded'

GEORGE TOWN: Penang police have initiated an internal investigation to find out why women arrested in an anti-vice raid in Pulau Tikus on Wednesday night had the letter "X" marked on their foreheads.

State police chief Datuk Ayub Yaakob said the practice was not part of the their normal standard operating procedure. He said the police did not adopt such practices as they did not want to embarrass suspects who were innocent until proven otherwise.

"The inspector-general of police has ordered an internal investigation into this matter and those found guilty will face disciplinary action.

"We understand the severity of this matter and why the people are unhappy about it."

The police have come under fire since Thursday after news and pictures of the branded women appeared in newspapers, which outraged several civil groups and women non-governmental organisations.

The NGOs have criticised the police for violating the women's human rights.

The 30 women, consisting of 29 Chinese nationals and one Vietnamese, were reportedly chained in groups, and each of them had an "X" marked on their foreheads after they were arrested in the raid at the entertainment outlet.

Some dailies also published a photograph of one of them with an "X" on her forehead.

Earlier, Ayub had defended the move, saying it was done to differentiate the women from the public.

He said some of the women had tried to escape, running into shops to buy clothes to change their appearance to blend in with other women.

Welcome to world's first university for 'lady boys'

STOMPer itsfriday shares these photos from the what is believed to be the world's first university for 'lady boys', or transgender persons, in Bangkok. 

This university is formally known as Suan Dusit Rajabhat University in Bangkok. It allows students who are born male to come to classes in uniforms for girls.

The STOMPer says:

"Thailand is known for being the best place in the world for sex reassignment surgery, hence it makes sense that the country would have a higher-than-average population of transgender individuals. 

"This is the only place where all the lady boys can have proper education without any prejudice. 

"With a school so accepting of them – known informally as “Ladyboy University,” it provides them a place to learn without judgment or social stigma."

A VIDEO circulating in a social networking site showed two male thieves in the Philippines being forced to kiss each other while locked up.

They were also beaten as blood is seen on their face and clothes.

According to an email sent to citizen journalism website, Stomp, James said: "These snatchers were caught and made to kiss each other during lock up."


He also expressed concern and said that it was "inhuman of them to do this to them".

In the video, authorities can be heard taunting and calling them names, while forcing the men to "do it right" or else they will be beaten.

The following is a translation of the video:

This one (points to middle guy) has a bad look in his eyes.

(Background voice to guy in the left) You, you've already killed someone, right?

Main guy: Yeah, he's killed someone!
