S'pore family dies in M'sian car wreck

A SINGAPOREAN family's trip to Malaysia for a happy occasion - a relative's wedding - ended in a tragic accident that claimed four lives.

A 62-year-old woman, Madam Aminah Adom, 62, died on the spot.

Her husband, Haji Mohd Yasin Husin, 75, who was driving, and their Indonesian maid, Ms Suriati, 30, died in Kemaman Hospital, Terengganu.

His granddaughter, Nor Istiharah, 12, died while being transferred from Kemaman Hospital to Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital in Kuantan, Pahang.

The only survivor was Nor Istiharah's 17-year-old brother, Taufik Hidayat.

Mr Mohd Yasin's son and nephew told The New Paper that he was used to long drives and often went on road trips to Malaysia with his family.

But at Kemaman, about 100km from their destination of Kuala Terengganu in the north-east state of Terengganu, his car skidded and hit a barrier at the side of the road.

As the car spun, an oncoming vehicle smashed into it.

4 injured in Malaysian shopping centre explosion

KUALA LUMPUR - Four people were injured while more than 300 people rescued and evacuated when an explosion occurred inside an eatery at the Empire Shopping Gallery in SS16, Subang Jaya here early Wednesday.

Two security guards and a couple suffered minor injuries.

Four people, who were also trapped in the lower ground floor of the shopping complex that also houses a boutique hotel, were rescued by firemen from the Subang Jaya Fire and Rescue Department.

70-year-old M'sian seeks life partner

A 70-year-old man from Johor Baru is looking for a life partner as he is lonely after his wife died of cancer six years ago.

According to China Press, the man identified only as Mr Mai, said he was looking for a partner who has good temperament, between the ages of 50 and 60 years.

"I don't care about how she looks as long as she does not throw tantrums. I will try to fulfil her wishes if she wants to buy expensive items.

"I don't have any financial problems as my children give me money. They will not object if I remarry," he said when contacted by the daily that got a tip-off that Mr Mai had contacted the Single Mothers Association looking for a partner.

However, Mr Mai denied that he had called the association, claiming that his friend, whose wife died a year ago, had used his handphone to call the association.

"I also hope to find a partner but I'm too shy to call the association."

Two M'sian terror suspects will not be brought to KL

KUALA LUMPUR - The two Malaysian terrorist suspects being detained at Guantanamo Bay for allegedly planning a second wave of attacks in the United States after the 9/11 tragedy are unlikely to be deported to Malaysia.

Sources said Mohd Farik Amin @ Zaid @ Zubair, 37, and Mohammed Nazir Lep @ Bashir Lep @ Lillie, 36, are instead likely to be charged either in a civil or military court in the United States.

Gay Malaysian pastor to tie the knot with his partner

KUALA LUMPUR - A Malaysian self-confessed gay pastor is to marry his African-American partner soon.

Press reports stated that Rev Ou Yang Wen Feng (pic) was likely to wed the Broadway musical producer by the end of the month or early September with ceremonies planned in New York and Malaysia.

Ou Yang told AFP in an interview in Hong Kong that his partner had popped the question on June 26, two days after New York City legalised same-sex marriages.

London riots: Malaysian student injured

PETALING JAYA - A 20-year-old Malaysian student who was on his way to buy food to break his fast was attacked by rioters in Barking East, London.

Wounded and bleeding on the street, he was later robbed by another gang.

The robbery on Mohd Asyraf Raziq Rosli which took place at 7pm London time (3am Malaysian time) yesterday was recorded by someone and later uploaded on YouTube.

Through the YouTube posting, the attack on Mohd Asyraf was highlighted in the BBC World News and newspapers like The Sun and The Telegraph.

The Malaysian Aids Council (MAC) today rose to Harapan Komuniti's support, saying that the NGO's dinner raided by the Selangor Islamic Department (Jais) on Wednesday was actually a fundraiser for HIV/AIDS support programmes.

This is despite Selangor state exco Hasan Ali claiming that Jais had found evidence of "proselytisation" during the event.

In a statement today, its president Mohd Zaman Khan said that the dinner was organised by the Damansara Utama Methodist Church (DUMC) to raise funds for the MAC partner organisation at its premises.

Malaysian PM's wife draws flak

The surat layang – “flying letters” in Malay, or anonymous assaults -- have been flying in record numbers in recent weeks, attacking Rosmah Mansor, the wife of Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak. They are being picked up and spread in volume by the country’s blogosphere, much of it arrayed against the Barisan Nasional, or ruling national coalition.

It isn’t certain who is behind the attacks, but they are clearly tied to national elections expected either late this year or early in 2012. The opposition and the dominant United Malays National Organization are blaming each other and both saying they aren’t involved. But the 60-year-old Rosmah has become a lightning rod for criticism of the administration, most of it centering on her alleged profligacy and her reported dominance of her husband’s political and social agenda. The attacks compare her to both Shakespeare’s Lady MacBeth, who drove her husband to murder and tragedy, and to former Filipino First Lady Imelda Marcos, who gained fame for her extravagance including owning hundreds of pairs of shoes.

More ominously, as Asia Sentinel has reported, she has been the subject of rumors for several years that she somehow was involved in the murder of Mongolian translator Altantuya Shaariibuu, to the extent that a businessman close to her allegedly paid a witness RM750,000 to get out of the country after he said the dead woman had an affair with her husband. In addition, court testimony has indicated that she met with a former aide to Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim prior to the aide’s accusing Anwar of raping him.

In the aftermath of the Bersih rally Health Minister Liow Tiong Lai tried to bulldoze away reports that the police had fired tear gas and water cannons into the Tung Shin hospital by bare faced denials backed up by a cowed hospital board member despite the wealth of video, photos and eyewitness accounts. He soon suffered intense public and political attacks until he was forced to recant his earlier statements and ordered an enquiry. He even had to beg the public for sympathy with his piteous claim that some quarters were trying to pull him down.

Liow Tiong Lai’s brazen attempt to bulldoze away the inconvenient truth may have worked in the 1970s when the mainstream media monopolized the flow of information but it does not work now. Back then the mainstream media could make or break any issue but technology and the internet have overtaken their dominance. The public have alternative sources of information now and anybody with a mobile phone and a PC can be a photographer, videographer, reporter or commentator.

Why then did the unfortunate Liow attempted something so foolhardy? He was neither a maverick nor a fool but a living symptom of BN’s inability to deal with the public at large. Instead of moving with the times to deal with a matured and well informed public BN’s thinking seems fossilized in the past, stuck in the time warp of the 1970s while technology and socio-economic conditions have evolved far ahead.

Malaysian student gang raped in London

She had attended a party at the prestigious Bellerbys College where she was studying.

LONDON/KUALA LUMPUR: An 18-year-old Malaysian student in London was allegedly gang-raped by several Russian men, including an intelligence officer who has been charged with the offence.

The Sun tabloid of London, which broke the story on Thursday, reported that the girl had attended a party at the prestigious Bellerbys College in Greenwich, South London, where she is studying.

The report, quoting sources, claimed that the girl was allegedly drugged and then filmed while being assaulted by seven Russian men, including the intelligence officer identified as Oleg Vladimirvich Ivanov, 23.


The attack is said to have happened early last Sunday during the party attended by English language students of the college.


The report stated that police retrieved iPhones with harrowing footage of the victim being gang-raped.


Ivanov was charged with three others identified as Gregory Andreev Melnikov, 22, Norayr Davtyan, 25, and Arnen Simonay, 26, with the offence at the Woolwich Magistrates' Court on Tuesday and Wednesday.


All four claimed trial and have been remanded.


They will appear at Woolwich Crown Court on Tuesday.



Two other suspects were released on bail while another was released without any charge.


The Sun report stated that the seven men had claimed to be students, but it quoted well-informed sources as saying that Ivanov worked in the Intelligence Section of the Moscow Police.

It stated that Ivanov had only been in Britain for a week before the alleged gang-rape.


The victim was said to have raised the alarm after staggering into a friend's room.


"She is distraught. She is very young and it is believed she was given a drug before being defiled," the report quoted a source as saying.


Two students at the college, contacted by The Star last night, were tight-lipped about the incident.


"What we know so far is what everyone has read in the newspaper (The Sun). We refuse to talk about the case as we are not allowed to. Please contact our college officials if you want a comment,'' said one of them.


The college officials could not be reached for comment.
