If Malaysians have a negative perception of the police force, and also the kind of feedback the police give us on crime, they are not to be blamed as the Polis Diraja Malaysia or PDRM has, despite attempts to boost their image, always been singled out as possibly the most corrupt and inefficient arm of the BN-led government.

It’s a pity and crying shame that the police force is now viewed with fear and contempt rather than in the past when police officers were admired for their bravery and courage, when the force was known to attract dedicated and disciplined men and women of character and substance.

Gone are those days when people could depend and count on the police to keep them safe, there were no negative vibes or perception of the police force or the crime rate and statistics, as there was no need to doubt or fear the police unless you had committed a crime.

KUALA LUMPUR- Sri Gading MP Datuk Mohamad Aziz denied calling for Bersih co-chairperson Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan to be hanged.

Mohamad Aziz said he had merely asked if that could be done for threatening national security.
Mohamad, in a press conference said that he had meant no harm in his statement, adding that what was spoken on Tuesday night at the Dewan Rakyat was in the context of national security.

Now, Ummi accuses her brother of trying to kill her

As if her public claims of virginity and the equally loud counter-claims by an ex-boyfriend that she wasn't were not disgraceful enough, Umno's political 'villainess' Ummi Hafilda is now accusing her brother Azwan Ali of trying to kill her.

According to the Star, Ummi lodged a police report over the matter at the Tan Tun Dr Ismail station on Tuesday.

Another government-controlled media, Buletin Utama TV3 also reported that Ummi lodged the complaint based on Azwan's  Twitter which basically said 'Let's catch that woman from Hell. Burn her body.'

British company Captive Media has developed a urine-controlled games console for use in urinals.

The device sits above the ceramic bowl of the urinal, with the console using infra-red to detect where the urine is falling.

The games are controlled by the direction of a man's pee stream.

Now, Najib says hudud is PAS' way to gain attention

The hullabaloo over the Islamic state and hudud agenda raised by PAS spiritual leader PAS Datuk Nik Aziz Nik Mat is nothing more than repeating an old issue for the sake of gaining attention, said Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

The prime minister said PAS took the stance after it was severely criticised over outlandish remarks made by its deputy president, Mohamad Sabu for hailing communist insurgents as warriors instead of the police in the Bukit Kepong carnage.

"I see this as tactical for PAS got a tremendous blow after Mohamad Sabu's uncalled for statement in ridiculing nationalist fighters, who were killed in the massacre. It had caused insurmountable anger among the Malays.

Malott: Now, even Washington is aware of Altantuya's murder

Prime Minister Najib Razak is in the doghouse over the way he has handled several contentious issues including the July 9 Bersih 2.0 rally for free and fair elections and the recent deporting of French lawyer William Bourdon over the submarines corruption scandal.

Former US ambassador John Malott minced no words in a recent interview with Malaysia Chronicle that that the Najib administration was "shooting itself in the foot" and creating confusion in the country. The attempts by his minders to cover for him have led to even greater repercussions, with many prominent US leaders shocked when they read of the Altantuya murder by his bodyguards in reputable Washington Post.

"This is a government – even though they have spent millions on Public Relations firms and management consultants – that keeps shooting itself in the foot. The deportation of the French lawyer is only the latest example. Now, for the first time, all the juicy details of that scandal – including the model who was murdered by the PM’s bodyguards – have appeared in the Washington Post. It just adds to the confusion among people here – what kind of a country is Malaysia, anyhow? And is Najib really the person that he has portrayed himself to be?" said Malott.

Ex-Perlis mufti Asri now the latest threat to Putrajaya

The National Security Council was today briefed on the dangers that former Perlis mufti Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin and several other religious figures posed for their links with Wahabism and terrorism.

A source disclosed today that the matter was discussed in a closed briefing attended by state muftis and representatives of Islamic religious departments from all over Malaysia.

Forty young 'Umno ulama' were also alleged to be on a 'watch list' of possible terror suspects, in the council briefing held this morning.

Now, RM100 for newborn babies in Penang

Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said all newborn babies in Penang will get a one-off' RM100 present from the state government starting this year.This is similar to the practise in Selangor, mooted by Mentri Besar Khalid Ibrahim.

According to Guan Eng, the Program Anak Emas Pulau Pinang or Penang Golden Child Programme may cost the state between RM5mil and RM10mil a year.

Under the scheme, a newborn Penangite would be entitled to the RM100 grant so long as one of their parents is a Penang voter and that the total family income does not exceed RM4,000.

Guan Eng said the proposal would be presented at the state executive committee meeting this week for discussion.

Civil society movement are upset that three alleged motorcycle thieves have been charged under Emergency Ordinance and want it repealed

KUALA LUMPUR: Four NGOs -Suaram, Bar Council, Loyar Burok, Lawyers for Liberty- would be filing a judicial review to challenge the detention of three youths under the Emergency Ordinance.

Muhamad Arif Abu Samah, 20, was placed under EO in Mersing this month.Two brothers – Mohamed Ramadan Mohamed Ali, 22, and Mohamad Rafe, 20, were placed under EO in Chemor, Pahang and Kulim, Kedah respectively.

All three are suspects involved in alleged motorcycle thefts in the district of Gombak.They were detained on March 8. The trio also have been relocated under the same act.

Their EO orders were signed by Deputy Home Minister Abu Seman Yusop on May 16.

The Emergency Ordinance (Public Order and Prevention of Crime) 1969, a form of detention without trial as provided for under the Internal Security Act, had been used to detain youths for alleged involvement in gang fights.

The use of the declaration has apparently now expanded to include alleged motorcycle theft, an offence that is also punishable under the Penal Code.

“The filing of a judicial review could be the first of its kind because it challenges the jurisdiction of the Agong to repeal all Emergency proclamations,” said Loyar Burok co-founder Edmund Bon at a press conference held in Bangsar this morning.

He said that the review seeks to compel the cabinet to advise the Agong to repeal all emergency declarations and related laws.

However this would not have been the case if Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak has responded in favour of the lawyers who had written to him by the 6 June.

Solicitors for the three had written two letters both addressed to Najib dated May 13 and May 26 this year, respectively, to lift the declared emergency proclamation and free their clients.

They urged Najib and the cabinet to advise the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to revoke the proclamation and also the EO within five days of receiving the letter, failing which it would be deemed a refusal to its application.

Another letter was sent on May 26 urging the prime minister to repeal the proclamations.

“There would not be application for judicial review if the Prime Minister had listened to our request,” said Edmund Bon.

The present trend

Bon and the rest of the representatives are optimistic that the Najib administration would accede to their request because Malaysia is currently seeking a re-election into the United Nations Human Rights Commission.

Apart from Bon, the press conference was also atttended by Andrew Khoo represented Bar Council’s human rights committee, Fadiah Nadwa Fikri of Lawyers for Liberty and the parents of the detainees along with lawyer Andrew Yong and Suaram by its coordinator E .Nalini.

Fadiah revealed that from her conversations with her client, Arif, the police had known the actual suspects who had paid the police off.

Khoo said that 5,000 people have been affected by the emergency laws based the findings of a UN report .

“By our count there are 1,500 people detained annually in Simpang Renggam. So on average, since 1969 and 42 years after that, thousands have had the EO implemented on them.

“The trend now is to detain youths for various allegations which cannot be substantiated like in the two cases,”said Bon.

“This is why we have sent letters to the PM asking to repeal the EO as this is a law similar to the ISA. If this is not done, we will use the three’s plight as a test case to secure their release,” he said.
