PETALING JAYA: Dr Mahathir Mohamad should take on his arch nemesis Anwar Ibrahim in the coming general election, said former West Malaysia Malay Teachers Union president Nordin Mahmood.

And Nordin wanted the duo to do battle in Anwar’s traditional stronghold of Permatang Pauh in Penang.

“As he [Mahathir] is adamant that he has contributed greatly to the country and that he still has the support of the rakyat, to prove this, he should contest against Anwar.

“Even if he loses, it would not be a great embarrassment as the seat is the stronghold of Anwar. But if he contests in Kubang Pasu [Mahathir's former parliamentary seat in Kedah] and ends up losing, his leadership status would suffer severely,” he added.

"Najib: Abolishing PTPTN will cost taxpayers RM43b"

SHAH ALAM, April 8 — Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has insisted that Malaysia’s oil revenue could cover shortages in the country’s education bill, dismissing Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s claim yesterday that abolishing a federal student loan scheme would cost taxpayers RM43 billion.

The opposition leader, speaking at a rally in Stadium Melawati here last night, also disputed the figure given by Najib and said his calculations were much lower.

Former premier Mahathir Mohamad, often accused of being jealous of his former deputy, said he was not surprised by Anwar Ibrahim's recent statement on "Israeli security", which Prime Minister Najib Razak's Umno party has been quick to allege betrayed the Muslim world.
“He will say anything to take over Putrajaya,” Mahathir, a former Umno president, told reporters on Monday.
