Responding to Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s call on the people of Johor to put Lim Kit Siang’s political career six feet underground, the latter has now thrown a dare to the former premier.

The DAP veteran challenged the patriarch of Umno to contest against him in the Gelang Patah parliamentary constituency in the coming 13th general election.

“With Mahathir still so active in Malaysian and in particular Umno politics, I invite him to come to Gelang Patah to contest in the elections and let the people of Johor decide whose political life should be ended, and whether Gelang Patah should be the political ‘kubur’ [grave] for me or him.

Mahathir, who towered over Malaysia for 22 years with his grand development projects and hard-nosed politics, is 87 but has peeled back the years to step from the shadows and whip up support for the long-ruling regime he moulded.

Through his blog and visits to key constituencies, Mahathir has sounded off in typically blunt style, warning that a loss by the 56-year-old government would bring chaos.

PETALING JAYA: Dr Mahathir Mohamad should take on his arch nemesis Anwar Ibrahim in the coming general election, said former West Malaysia Malay Teachers Union president Nordin Mahmood.

And Nordin wanted the duo to do battle in Anwar’s traditional stronghold of Permatang Pauh in Penang.

“As he [Mahathir] is adamant that he has contributed greatly to the country and that he still has the support of the rakyat, to prove this, he should contest against Anwar.

“Even if he loses, it would not be a great embarrassment as the seat is the stronghold of Anwar. But if he contests in Kubang Pasu [Mahathir's former parliamentary seat in Kedah] and ends up losing, his leadership status would suffer severely,” he added.

KUALA LUMPUR,— Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's racist remarks are destroying rather than helping the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) build up its reputation for Election 2013, MIC's strategy chief S. Vell Paari said today.

The still influential former prime minister had called Malays to defend their special rights and ticked off the other races in this mainly Muslim country for challenging the community's religious claims in the run-up to polls.

"Dr M is retired, he should not disturb the country's administration with his racist statements that do not help the government," Vell (picture) told The Malaysian Insider today, referring to the country's longest-serving prime minister of 22 years by his nickname.

"He should know Malaysians are increasingly mature, why need to use racial issues to divide the people?" said the son of former MIC president and a known staunch Dr Mahathir supporter, Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu.

They asked if PR would hold true to their promise to exercise restraint whether they failed or succeeded in wresting power, and not take to the streets to celebrate in a grand show of pomp and pageantry in victory.

KUALA LUMPUR, March 2 — Malaysia may become bankrupt as is happening now in the West if the federal government caves in to public pressure and sets a minimum wage policy, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said today.

Still influential despite having retired from office in 2003, the former prime minister warned that the federal government’s seeming haste to adopt a minimum wage policy without taking into account the spike in public holidays to include the weekends and the holy days of all major religions was a serious risk to the country’s economy.

Dr M letters proves ties with Israel, PKR, PAS leaders say

KUALA LUMPUR, March 1 — Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s just-released correspondence with three Israel prime ministers proves his repeated attempts to establish ties with the Zionist regime during his tenure, PKR and PAS leaders alleged today.

The leaders pointed out that from the three letters publicly released by Putrajaya yesterday, it was clear Dr Mahathir who had initiated the correspondence for the purpose of maintaining a relationship with Israel.

PUTRAJAYA, Feb 29 — Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad invited the government today to make a full audit on “all Tuns” after DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang claimed taxpayers lost RM100 billion in financial scandals during the former’s 22 years in charge.

Dr Mahathir’s policies have been the subject of scrutiny in recent weeks, after the Najib administration decided to settle out-of-court the RM589 million debt owed by former Malaysia Airline System Bhd (MAS) chief Tan Sri Tajudin Ramli.

Dr M calls all Malaysians ‘racists’

Dr Mahathir said those who accused him of racism were similarly guilty. 

SHAH ALAM — Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad labelled all Malaysians “racists” today when responding to accusations against Barisan Nasional (BN) leaders for playing the race card when lobbying for Malay and Chinese support.

The former prime minister shrugged off criticisms, pointing out that it was common for anyone to ignore the interests of others when trying to get their way.

“This country, everybody is racist. Now, everybody talks about his own interest, doesn’t care about other people’s interest.

“So let’s not hide and say we are not racist,” the straight-talking politician told a press conference today.

KUALA LUMPUR — Former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad today confessed to corresponding with his then Israeli counterpart, Ehud Barak, but said this was to convey Malaysia’s refusal to recognise the Jewish state.

“I responded saying that Malaysia will not have any ties with them (Israel) for as long as they refused to acknowledge the right of the Palestinians,” Dr Mahathir was quoted as saying in a Bernama Online report today.

According to the ex-prime minister, Barak had initiated the exchange to seek a softening of Malaysia’s stance on the Israeli-Palestinian dispute.

Allegations on the existence of this correspondence had surfaced online recently.

With all things in the balance, it is only right that the people of Malaysia test the ability of its two prospective prime ministers on a public stage to discuss public policies. Yes, it’s high time we see a Najib Razak - Anwar Ibrahim debate.

For the record, the Republican Presidential candidates in the United States have already had 20 debates; which has helped narrow the field down to only 4 candidates. The debate floor is a great place to gauge each candidates stand on such things as immigration laws, English as the official language of America and setting up more jobs for unemployed Americans.

So why can’t Malaysia have a debate between Najib and Anwar?

Umno has not made any effective improvements since Election 2008 general and is unable to garner support from Malays, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamed has said ahead of the party’s general assembly at the end of the month. 

The party’s longest-serving president was quoted by its newspaper Utusan Malaysia today saying Umno currently lacked good, credible leaders and that it was a pale shadow of its former glory. 

“Umno became badly damaged when Tun Abdullah Badawi took over. Because he prioritised his family and there were so many corruption allegations. And everyone knew about his son-in-law’s involvement,” he said, referring to Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin.

In what many political pundits termed as one of the greatest ironies and an act of great hypocrisy, former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad has condemed law lecturer Aziz Bari as being 'kurang ajar' or rude for questioning the recent decision by the Selangor Sultan over an alleged apostasy and church raid incident.

"It is hypocritical of Mahathir to now defend the Sultans. Who could have been ruder than him and Umno," opposition MP for Batu Tian Chua toldMalaysia Chronicle.

Aziz, an outspoken and well-respectecd professor at the International Islamic University of Malaysia, had reportedly said that Sultans could be questioned. There had been much unhappiness over the Selangor Ruler's decision which was deemed unfair by Christian groups.

Were we ever surprised that things would turn out this way? Was it ever going to be a surprise that Prime Minister Najib Razak and wife Rosmah Mansor would apply to strike out the subpoena placed on their heads?

Dr M says British advisers were rulers

SERDANG, Sept 12 — Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad conceded today that Malaysia was never colonised by the British but insisted that their advisers acted as if they were the rulers instead of the Malay Sultans.

The 85-year-old former prime minister said that the British “acted as if we were colonised” in response to the claim by the National Professors’ Council (MPN) that Malaya, the precursor to Malaysia, was never colonised by Britain and had merely been a protectorate.

“The Sultans decided to invite the British to come and advise them on how to administer the country. We were not conquered in that sense. But the fact remains that when the British were here, they operated as if we were colonised.

Dr M: Some History text books inaccurate need clearer explanation

"Current text books are inaccurate as they had not given a clear background on the fight for the nation's independence.

“Not much is mentioned on the roles played by leaders such as firstprime minister Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra.

“And, because of this, the younger generation do not understand the country's history and origin," the former prime minister said.

“History cannot be reviewed as we cannot change what had happened. It is better to tell the truth about the nation's past,” he said adding that young Malaysians assumed the fight for independence was just another common fight that also took place in other countries.

He was commenting on a recent statement by Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Khaled Nordin that the history syllabus for schools would be revised following new findings of the nation's past.
