Mahfuz, Salahuddin sue IGP, govt over Bersih arrests

PAS vice presidents Mahfuz Omar and Salahuddin Ayub have decided to sue the Inspector-General of Police, the Malaysian government and two other senior cops for unlawful arrest during the Bersih 2.0 rally on July 9.

Mahfuz, 54, and Salahuddin Ayub, 50, accused the cops of mala fide in separate suits filed by their lawyer Zulhazmi Shariff at the Kuala Lumpur High court on Monday. Both  leaders claimed general compensation, exemplary damages, costs and any relief deemed fit by the court.

Japanese pop star sacked over sex scandal

Japanese pop singer Aya Hirano is believed to have been dropped from her label, Lantis, because of an alleged sex scandal.

This follows after the latest edition of Japanese magazine Bubka published pictures of the 24-year-old J-pop star in bed with a band mate. The photos are presumed to have been taken 'post sex'.

Netizens and observers believe the man in the photos is her 35-year-old guitarist, Katsundo.

Insider information revealed that Aya slept with a total of three of her band mates except the bassist. They too have reportedly been dropped from the label.

Rumours of the scandal first emerged early this year. In February, fans of the anime 'Kizumonogatari' launched a petition to have Aya removed from a role she was supposed to play.

They said the scandal-hit voice actress would have ruined the image of the character.

An anonymous post on Japanese website 2ch.net several months ago said:

"Hirano's had three of her four Lantis band members. Her approaches became so problematic she was reported to the agency boss for excessively aggressive courting. The agency then dropped Lantis."

"I heard it from someone close to a Lantis employee - though I doubt any of you lot will believe me in any case."

"I don't remember too well as it was a year ago, but as I recall the only one she didn't do was the bassist. I do recall that the president fired the other three."

Aya first announced on her Twitter in May that she was no longer with Lantis.

Boy, if it was true that the US$24 million controversial diamond ring indeed belongs to his wife Rosmah Mansor, that ring is cursed.

Bersih hands over memo to King

The Bersih's eight-point memorandum was delivered to the palace on Friday by two members of the steering committee.

KUALA LUMPUR: Election watchdog Bersih 2.0 has finally delivered its eight-point memorandum to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin.

Richard Yeoh and Liau Kok Fah, members of the Bersih 2.0 steering committee, gave the memorandum to an aide of the King’s private secretary on Friday afternoon.

“The memorandum called for electoral reforms,” Liau told FMT today.

Bersih 2.0’s eight-point memorandum calls for a cleaning of the electoral roll, the reformation of the postal ballot, using indelible ink, a minimum of 21 days for campaigning, free and fair access to media, the strengthening of public institutions such as the Election Commission, and putting a stop to corruption and dirty politics.

It also calls for the release of the six leaders of Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM), including Member of Parliament Dr Michael Jeyakumar Devaraj, who has been detained under the Emergency Ordinance.

The Bersih 2.0 rally held on July 9 saw tens of thousands people dressed in yellow taking to the streets to call for fair electoral processes.

However, the Bersih steering committee members were not able to march to the palace to deliver their memorandum as they had been arrested earlier by the police.

Man kills friend after argument over toilet

JOHOR BARU - Police have launched a manhunt for a man who killed his best friend after they got into a heated argument over the usage of a toilet.

The deceased, known only as Juli, 37, was believed to have been told off by the suspect for using his (the suspect's) toilet in a rented house in Kampung Bakar Batu, around 6.30am on Friday morning.

It is learned that Juli was in the toilet at the time and scolded by the suspect, who wanted to take a bath and performed his prayers.

The suspect knocked on the toilet's door asking the victim to hurry up and both men had an altercation, during which the suspect took out a knife and stabbed Juli several times.

Johor Baru (South) OCPD Asst Comm Zainuddin Yaacob, who confirmed the incident, said police had launched a manhunt to find the suspect and believed he was still in the state.

ACP Zainuddin also urged those with information to contact the police hotline at 07-2212999 or lodge a report at the nearest police station.

Shark jumps over surfer

A photographer has caught an amazing moment on tape at a beach in Florida, US.

Jacob Langston was videotaping a group of surfers when a shark leaped out of the water and jumped over one of them at New Smyrna Beach recently.

The cameraman, however, did not realised it until a surfer asked him: “Dude! Did you see that?”

Later back in his office while editing his video, he saw the awesome stun performed by the shark.

No one was injured in the incident.

Indonesia recalls ambassador over Saudi beheading

JAKARTA - Indonesia on Monday recalled its ambassador to Saudi Arabia amid anger over the beheading of an Indonesian maid convicted of murdering her Saudi employer, Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa said.

Riyadh carried out the execution by sword without giving Indonesia prior notice, Natalegawa told reporters after being grilled about the government's response in parliament.

"We cannot accept it and will file a strong protest to the Saudi government," he said, adding that Jakarta's ambassador had been recalled for consultations.

The woman, Ruyati binti Sapubi, was found guilty of murdering Saudi woman Khairiya bint Hamid Mijlid by striking her repeatedly on the head with a meat cleaver and stabbing her in the neck.

The migrant worker had been subjected to constant verbal abuse and refused permission to leave the kingdom, according to Indonesia's National Agency for Placement and Protection of Migrant Workers.

"In court, Ruyati confessed she killed her employer's wife after a quarrel because her request to be allowed to go home was turned down," agency chief Jumhur Hidayat told Antara news agency.

In parliament on Monday, lawmaker Teguh Juwarno called on Natalegawa to resign and said Indonesia should stop sending migrant workers to Saudi Arabia in the wake of a spate of abuse cases.

"This is obviously the government's failure. I ask Minister Marty to be a gentleman and admit his failure, suspend the Indonesian ambassador to Saudi Arabia or resign himself as a gesture of accountability," he said.

The beheading brought the number of executions in the ultra-conservative kingdom this year to 28, according to an AFP tally based on official and human rights group reports.

Around 70 percent of the 1.2 million Indonesians working in Saudi Arabia are domestic helpers, according to officials.

Indonesians were outraged in April when a Saudi court overturned the conviction of a Saudi woman who had been jailed for three years for allegedly torturing her Indonesian maid.

Sumiati binti Salan Mustapa, 23, claimed her employer beat her causing internal bleeding and broken bones, scalded her head with an iron and slashed her with scissors, leaving her horribly disfigured and traumatised.

In November last year the beaten body of another Indonesian maid, Kikim Komalasari, 36, was found near Abha. Two people, her employers, were arrested in that case.

Labour activists and rights groups have said the incidents highlight the paucity of protection for millions of mostly Asian domestic workers in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf states.

Local media reported there are 22 Indonesian migrant workers facing execution in Saudi Arabia.

London-based watchdog Amnesty International this month called on Saudi Arabia to stop applying the death penalty, saying there had been a significant rise in the number of executions carried out over the past six weeks.

Controversy over Two Disabled Gays Who Were Kicked Out of Pool

An employee at a public swimming pool in eastern Kentucky was suspended for a week without pay after telling two disabled gay men to leave, city of Hazard officials said Saturday.

The suspended city employee Kim Haynes told investigators that the two men were engaged in an excessive display of affection June 10, and that he would have told any other couple to leave had he seen similar behavior. Haynes, however, also acknowledged he said “We don’t tolerate that kind of activity around here” and cited the Bible in an argument with Laura Quillen, a member of the social service group Mending Hearts, which was overseeing the group.

Quillen told investigators the men did nothing inappropriate.

According to a report released by city attorney Paul R. Collins, summing up the conflicting accounts, at least one witness saw the men “standing `man to man’ or `belly to belly’ in the pool, splashing each other with water and pushing each other under the water.” The witness “also said he observed them hug each other on at least one occasion” and give each other a kiss, the report said.

Pearlman and Haynes were not at work on Saturday and could not be reached by the newspaper for comment by telephone.

Meanwhile, dozens of people rallied at the pool Saturday in support of the gay men.

“It’s time that people stood up for people. It’s just the right thing to do,” Marsha Morgan from Leslie County told WYMT-TV.

Jordan Palmer, president of the Kentucky Equality Federation, said the men were discriminated against.

“There was not kissing, and there was nothing of that sort. One of them sat on the other’s knee and that was it,” said Jordan Palmer, president of the Kentucky Equality Federation.

The manager of the Hazard Pavilion also was reprimanded for unbecoming conduct, The Courier-Journal reported. Charlotte Pearlman used inappropriate and obscene language when declining comment to a television news crew, the city said.

The city also said new anti-discrimination signs will be posted at the pool, as well as signs warning against excessive public displays of affection.
